Mysteries of the city

Chain of jobs

The willingness to grant an opportunity and collaborate in the effort to prevent recidivism in crime has led companies in the capital to invest in hiring former inmates. Manufacturer of shirts produced with organic cotton and PET bottles, PanoSocial has 30% of its work in outsourced workshops carried out by egresses of the prison system. "The profit obtained from the sale of clothing is being reversed to the creation of our own studio, which will be entirely occupied by ex-detainees," says brand coordinator Natacha Lopes. The shirts are delivered by bicycle and cost about 120 reais (in the photo, one of the models). Other companies, such as the ArtPres mechanic and the construction firm Construcap, joined initiatives such as the Second Chance, a niche-focused employment agency created by the NGO AfroReggae, and Pró-Egresso, a program of the state's Department of Penitentiary Administration. Below, the characteristics of some of the vacancies offered in projects of the type by the companies.
